Evan Hurdle-Yoder, age 2 1/2 in this photograph, was adopted at birth by dads Harvey and Kevin, who at the time had been together for 19 years. Evan is now 5 and the guys celebrated their 24th anniversary, May 25th, 2012. They have an open adoption, limited contact with the mother, are Facebook friends with her and send her photos.
Now parents together, Harvey and Kevin attribute the strength of their relationship to being best friends, their trust in each other, and their mutual unconditional love of their son. No more children are in the picture but they are clear in their joy of being parents, in "watching their son learn and experiencing the world through his eyes."
That the world is changing can be seen in the eyes of the future generations. When checking in at Torrey Pines Lodge, Evan proudly announced to everyone in the lobby, "These are my Dads." His friend confided that he wished he could have 3 dads "because having 2 is cool."
Harvey admits that the hardest part of parenting is "trusting that you are making the right decisions." He and Kevin are waiting for Pennsylvania to allow for gay marriage to further legally solidify their family and to set an example for Evan and his friends that his Dads can be married too. Fortunately, they were allowed to co-adopt their son. Both men enjoy a very special closeness with each other's family. Their parents joined them together on a cruise and holiday cookouts are a shared family gathering.
